The main goal of Work Package 5 (WP5) is to ensure the effective onboarding of users, including the enrollment of their Personal Identification Data (PID) into the NOBID LSP’s European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW), via secure and user-friendly procedures. Moreover, WP5 issues PID sets, handles PID revocations and identifies a diverse and representative pilot user group to onboard. It thus supports the broader EUDIW initiative and other Large-Scale Pilots (LSPs), contributing to building a cohesive digital identity framework across the EU.

Benefits for citizens and businesses

All WP5’s activities are designed to ensure that the onboarding process is robust, secure, and user-friendly, ultimately contributing to the success of the EUDIW initiative. Particularly, WP5 is constantly working on placing citizens at the heart of design processes, paying specific attention to:

  • Enhancing security: the EUDIW will offer secure storage and management of personal identity data, reducing the risk of identity theft.
  • Allowing convenience: users will easily verify their identity and access services online, streamlining processes that traditionally require physical documents.
  • Strengthening privacy control: citizens will have greater control over their personal data, deciding when and with whom to share them
  • Fostering interoperability: EUDIW will support cross-border identity verification, facilitating travel and online transactions within the EU.

Also, on the business side, WP5 focuses on providing major benefits such as:

  • Cost efficiency: streamlined identity verification processes reduce administrative costs and time.
  • Regulatory compliance: businesses can easily comply with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations using verified digital identities.
  • Enhanced customer experience: faster and more secure onboarding processes improve customer satisfaction and trust.
  • Market expansion: businesses can serve customers across the EU more effectively, leveraging the standardized digital identity framework.

State of play

As of today, WP5 comprises six PID providers: Denmark, Italy, Iceland, Norway, and Latvia as national PID providers, and iProov, who is also actively participating in WP5 as a PID provider. All of them have successfully provided their High-Level Solution Descriptions for PID Issuers within the NOBID LSP’s WP5 framework. Moreover, each PID provider has outlined their specific approaches and technical architectures for the onboarding process to the EUDIW.

During the last few months, the focus has been on integrating into the Wallet provided by WP4, as we will see in the next episode of the “Meet the Work Packages” series. So far, iProov, Norway, and Iceland have successfully integrated all the specifications into the Wallet. Integration is expected to be completed by Denmark in August 2024 and by Italy and Latvia by December 2024.

Next steps

The next steps will involve the rest of the PID providers to integrate into the wallet and completing the final activities of the Work Package, including finalizing a deliverable to the European Commission.
